Fir Blog - Year 2

Friday 12th July - Olympic Day

Fir class enjoyed learning about the history of the Olympics and about Paris 2024 where the Olympics will be held later this year. We made Olympic torches and learnt about some of the flags of different countries. Our focus was on Asia and we learnt about Japan. We tried learning some Japanese numbers as well as doing Origami and Karaoke which both originated in Japan. After lunch, it was our turn to take part in Olympic activities outside and we had a few excellent torch bearers to help guide the way.

Friday 8th March - World Book Day

Fir Class had a wonderful day celebrating books and reading. Everyone came dressed in fabulous costumes and Miss Trunchbull spent the day scaring both parents and children with her outrageous antics!

During assembly, the children paraded their costumes for all of EYFS and KS1 to see.

We enjoyed making Miss Trunchbull's special chocolate cake and Bruce Bogtrotter was not the only one that got to enjoy eating it!

Children from Rowan class joined us for a special Book Club.

Friday 13th October 2023

Well, it has been a very busy few weeks for Year 2. We have been exploring lots of different types of writing, including recounts and poetry. We are currently working on our acrostic poems which will be entered into the 'All About Me' competition. Look out for our work soon. We had a great day during our 'Great Fire of London' workshop and learnt many things about the historic event. In Maths, we have been exploring our understanding of place value and in Science, we have learnt about different properties of materials.

What an amazing workshop we were treated to today by "Wild Science". We had the opportunity to meet some wonderful animals including chinchillas, snakes, a gheko and a frog! We had the best time learning all about the animals and the habitats they required for survival. We were even able to hold and stroke them! Thank you Wild Science- we all loved it!

Friday 19th May 2023

To support our learning of habitats in science, we went on a mini-beast hunt around the school grounds. We used our observation skills to find micro-habitats in our chosen area and investigated them to see which mini-beasts lived in them. We then recorded our findings on a tally chart. We had a great time exploring and saw lots of different insects including spiders, woodlouse, beetles and even butterflies!

Wednesday 22nd March 2023

In D&T we have been learning about cooking and the skills we need to be successful in the kitchen. Our project was to design and write instructions on how to create our own sandwich. We tasted lots of different ingredients before deciding our recipe. We practised using the "claw grip" for our cutting skills and then tasted and evaluated our sandwiches once they were made. I think you will agree they look delicious!

Today we celebrated World Book Day in school. We all dressed up as our favourite book characters and had a wonderful time immersing ourselves in the world of books- we even went on a golden ticket hunt! To start the celebrations we took part in a workshop led by The Mighty Pen on Monday. During this activity we became villains and acted out our own villainous scene. We will be using this workshop to help us describe a villain in English.

Thursday 12th January 2023

We have had great fun experimenting with clay today. We took our time to smooth the edges and using "slip and score" (clay mixed with water) we successfully stuck shapes onto our mini slabs in preperation for when we create our own house tiles.

Friday 16th December 2022

Today we finally finished our puppets in Fir class! We had a great time decorating our characters with glitter, felt and pens. We took special care using the running stitch and have all successfully made a working puppet- take a look at our creations below.

Friday 14th October 2022

This week Fir class have been busy creating their art display based on pieces of work by the Japanese artist Fumihiro Kato. A multicultural artist, Kato creates illusion work using line, colours and nature as his focus. The children have done a wonderful job, using a variety of media to create both the background and the fish on the display- the finished piece is very effective!

We were also lucky this week to be joined by another mystery reader. Thank you for coming in and reading us "The Baddies" by Julia Donaldson, we all thoroughly enjoyed.

Last week in Year 2

What a wonderful way to end the week. A bouncy castle followed by a party.

Thank you Year 2 for being such a wonderful class. It has been such a pleasure to teach and watch you grow. Have a super summer and stay safe!

Rye Mead Nature Reserve 22.06.22

A double-decker bus transported us to the nature reserve, where we began our day exploring the vast life living in and around the ponds. We found many different creatures, from pond skaters to leaches. We even caught a fish!
in the afternoon, we explored life in long grasses and under logs. We found grasshoppers, beetles, moths, snails and many more.

What a great day. Maybe you can visit again with your parents. Look out for the leaflet in your book bag.

Queen's Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

The day began in the classroom which was decorated with bunting. The children made their own flags and we then watched the coronation and viewed photos of the Queen growing up. We listened to questions from local children and then listened to memories of the Queen from the elderly.

In English, we shared the book, The Queen's Hat. Then wrote our own versions. In maths, we found many ways to make 70 and then played a Jubilee-style Sudoku.

We had a drawing lesson with the artist Steve Antony. What terrific artists we have!

During the afternoon, we had cake outside on picnic blankets.

What a lovely day!

What a busy few weeks we have had!

DT

Our DT topic came to a delicious end, as we made and ate our sandwiches, rolls and wraps. We developed some useful kitchen skills and all without losing any fingers. Phew!

Charity hop

We transformed ourselves into bunnies and we hopped around the track and raised some much-needed funds for charity. Thank you all very much.

PE

And finally, we had our ‘Game On’ PE session which started in the sunshine and ended rather abruptly in a snow storm! However, we all had fun playing games such as capture the flag.

Easter

Enjoy the photos below and may I wish you all a very lovely Easter.

Thank you to Holly's mum who was this week's secret reader.

The children again sat beautifully as they enjoyed two stories.

A big thank you to two more secret readers. Please do sign up for this. The children absolute love it. Thank you again.

DT Day

We started off the day by experimenting how many times we could fold a piece of paper in half. We varied the size of the paper to see if that would change the putcome. Give it a try yourelf!

Then we had an assembly and met an engineer, Ben. He works for Dyson. He shared some of his amazing creations. We then thought about our own inventions or designs. What creative minds Fir Class have! I loved looking at their ideas: We had a four decker bus, a human hamster wheel, a recycling vending machine, several robots and many many more great ideas.

During the afternoon we built a cage to protect an egg when dropped from a height and finally we tried to construct our own towers using spaghetti - raw not cooked!

Here are some photos of the day.

World Book Day 3.03.22

What an awesome effort Fir Class! Everyone dressed up. The day began with a special message from the author Sarah Oliver. We then listened to one of her stories. She took us through the stages of writing her own book and then we made our own mini versions which we hope to share with the children in Reception. We were able to parade our costumes to Year 6. What a fun day. The library was decorated with an arch of balloons, which looked fantastic. Do talk to your child about their favourite part of the day.

Here are some photos for you to enjoy.

Anti-Bullying Week

This week we have been celebrating Anti-Bullying Week.  The theme this year was ONE KIND WORD.  This afternoon we wrote a kind word or phrase for our peers.  We realised it made us feel happy to give and receive kindness.  We also thought as many words as we could that meant kindness.
