Phonics
At Tanners Wood, we use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised as our systematic, synthetic phonics (SSP) programme.
In Nursery, we teach Little Wandle Foundations for Phonics where children are exposed to high quality stories, poems and nursery rhymes to develop their language and phonological awareness. This ensures children are well prepared to begin grapheme- phoneme correspondence and blending at the start of Reception.
We begin teaching phonics in Reception and follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised progression, which ensures children build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through school. Within our phonics lessons, we teach children to recognise, segment and blend sounds in order to read words with increasing fluency.
We aim to teach children to become confident, independent readers as quickly as possible so they can navigate the world of reading around them. We encourage our children to see themselves as readers for both pleasure and purpose.
